Morning Highlights

Our Focus For Today Is On Small Cap, Followed By Property, Mid Cap and Commodity Sector

The Market started weak as led by Blue Chips; STI opened lower at 2863.46.  Local market is trading half day till 12:30 today, whereas Japanese financial markets are closed on today and Friday for the New Year's holiday period. 

  • Lookout for Design Studio and Ascendas India Trust
  • STE said on Thursday that VT iDirect, inc.  has bought all of Parallel Limited for about S$9 million in cash.
  • BRC says unaware of reason for the trading activity on Wednesday

News Updates:

  1. Dow industrials hits their highest close in 15 months, as key indexes notch their seventh gain in eight sessions. Nasdaq closes at its highest level since Sept. 3, 2008.

  2. GMAC Financial Services said Wednesday that it will get $3.79 billion from the Treasury Department as part of its plan to strengthen the company's capital base.

  3. The share of global foreign exchange reserves held in U.S. dollars declined in the 3Q of 2009 even as overall world reserves swelled to a record $7.5 trillion, International Monetary Fund data showed on Wednesday . (Reuters)

  4. Russian aluminum giant UC Rusal, world’s largest aluminum producer plans to raise up to $2.59 billion through its Hong Kong IPO after setting a price range for the share sale Thursday, according to filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It plans to sell 1.61 billion shares at range of HKD9.10 to HKD12.50. Rusal is slated to price the shares Jan. 22, with their trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange beginning Jan. 27.

In Summary,

Index closed up 17.86 points at 2897.62, with 1.1480 billion traded. Considerably good volume since is only half day trading.

We are near a psychological barrier of 2900. We’ll keep a lookout for this.

Last but not least, we intend to take  half profit should Indofood Agri falls to 2.31. For conservative traders, we have attained our first level profiting taking at 2.34 for short term holding.

Morning Highlights

Our Focus For Today Is On Property, Mid Cap, Small Cap and Commodity Sector

Singapore Market started easier on Wednesday in light trading as many investors started vacations for the New Year holidays.

We are focusing more on Small Cap. Commodity is fairly strong but do avoid Olam as this stock has suffered quite steep pullback from its previous high of 2.84 to 2.54. Moreover, the moving averages are also pointing down. Hence, it is likely for Olam to consolidate further till a breakthrough at 2.84.

  • SinoGrandness broke high of 0.45
  • Anwell broke high of 0.725

Corporate Announcements
Keppel Corp has delivered West Vencedor to Seadrill Limited ahead of schedule and within budget, garnering a bonus of $100,000. The completion wraps up a record year of 13 rig deliveries by Keppel FELS, all of them delivered on time and within budget. The company was awarded a total of $2mn for early deliveries of most of these newbuilds.

  2. Standard & Poor’s/ Case-Shiller Index shows 7.3% Annual drop in home prices from October last year.

  3. Japan December Manufacturing PMI 53.8 in December, up 1st time in 3 months as shown in a survey, suggesting growth in production will continue due to demand from other Asian countries.

Stocks nudge slightly higher with the key STI up 5.11 points to open at 2860.79. Volume is expected to be low this week, with many investors still on vacation or waiting until the new year to make major market moves.

News Updates:

  1. Midas’ JV company Nanjing SR Puzhen Rail Transport secures a RMB1.56bn contract to supply 32 metro train sets for the Pearl River Delta Inter-City Train Project (Dongguan – Shenzhen Section) and Dongguan – Huizhou Inter-City Train Project. Delivery of the train cars is expected to commence in the second half of 2011 and completed by end of 2013.

  2. Keppel Land, through its fully-owned subsidiary Da Di Investment, has acquired a 30.3 ha site in Shenyang, China, for 884 million yuan (S$180 million).

  3. Mapletree Logistics Trust has signed a conditional sale and purchase agreement to buy a warehouse in Japan for about S$68 million (JPY4.36 billion).

  4. IFS Capital Limited said on Monday that its subsidiary, IFS Capital (Thailand) Public Company Limited, has submitted its application to the Securities Exchange Commission in Thailand to list its shares on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

  5. OCBC on Monday said it has invested RMB60 million for a 19.99% stake in South China Trust Co., Ltd (SCTCL). OCBC subscribed for 60 million shares in SCTCL at a price of RMB1 per share, hence, the total consideration for the share subscription is RMB60 million, or S$12.2 million (US$8.7 million)

Visitor arrivals in Singapore rose 8.4% in November from a year earlier, the highest growth for 2009, the Singapore Tourism Board said on Monday. (Business Times)

  1. Japan’s Industrial Output rose for a ninth straight month in November, according to data issued Monday. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's industrial production index rose 2.6% from October to a seasonally adjusted 88.3, beating a 2.4% forecasted rise from a survey reported by Reuters
  2. RBS reportedly to sell about $4.8 billion worth of assets in coming months, with its Far East banking and retail operations expected to be among the first to secure a buyer.
